Anfora

Anfora, 2022, 122 x 292 x 60 cm, fiberglass, recycled styrofoam, polyurethane resin, natural pigments & Carrara marble dust

Anfora beckons you into the Ponder Peace sculpture garden. Playing with scale and optical illusion the work sets the aesthetic tone of the sculpture garden as a pseudo- archaeological site.

The sculptureā€™s silhouette resembles a half buried amphora, a vessel or jar utilized in ancient Greek, Roman and Etruscan cultures. Historically the amphora was used to store and transport wine, olive oil and grain. Anfora is thus a symbolic container, as its location is a working farm producing all three of the traditionally stored goods. Anfora encourages you to touch the rough texture of the powdered Carrara marble covering its petrified resin surface. Its earthenware tones were achieved through the use of natural pigments like ochre, burnt sienna and umber.

Designed to be viewed from different perspectives the work plays with optical illusion, appearing whole or fragmented in two parts. Here the amphora is elevated to monumental size, celebrating the simple beauty and elegance of a utilitarian object that once distributed sustenance to an entire empire.

Anfora is part of Ponder Peace at Isola di Pace a sculpture garden custom built for a private estate in Umbria, Italy. It was created by Isotta Page and co fabricated by Isotta Page and Ulen/Ellen Mohan.
