Medusa

Medusa, 2022, 40 x 40 x 12 cm, fiberglass, recycled styrofoam, polyurethane resin, brass, bronze & coldpatine

The Ponder Peace sculpture garden opens with Medusa, a hidden sculpture inspired by the client's interest in the mythological symbol. Here, two distinctly different pagan symbols are combined in a levitating bronze medallion. Medusa from Greek mythology is transformed into a Celtic Green Man motif.

Channeling the ancient goddess Gaia, Medusa is the benevolent feminine protector of the surrounding landscape and her carved face emerges from a canopy of lush ivy. The patina of her oxidized bronze skin is reminiscent of the bluish moss growing on the oak trees of the surrounding forest, and her piercing brass-coated eyes survey all activity on the estate.

The stoic face of the sculpture was inspired by the Medusa Rondanini which dates from 150-160 AD and is housed in the Torlonia marble collection in Rome. This piece is a hybrid emblem combining the allegorical power of rebirth from Celtic Green Man tradition and the raw enchantment of Medusa from mythology as an evil eye and symbol of Female strength.

Medusa is part of Ponder Peace at Isola di Pace a sculpture garden custom built for a private estate in Umbria, Italy. It was created by Isotta Page and co fabricated by Isotta Page and Ulen/Ellen Mohan.
